STATEMENT

"I'm interested in how things hold together, only just. One thing leans against another, catches it, suspends it, keeps it in place. The connections can be slight, temporary, almost not enough - closer to vulnerability than fault."

“I start with material rather than an idea — a line, a weight, a colour, a particular resistance. Mostly ordinary objects, occasionally something else; it’s the materiality and formal quality of a thing that draws me in. Things are cut, taken apart, moved and brought back together without being permanently fixed. I’m interested in how things hold together, only just. One thing leans against another, catches it, suspends it, keeps it in place. The connections can be slight, temporary, almost not enough — closer to vulnerability than fault. Making comes first: physical, repetitive, uncertain. I want to leave room for what I hadn’t anticipated. I want to do as little as possible with these things. In reality I often do a lot — test, move, alter, remake, then edit back, until what’s left is just enough to hold together, nothing more.”
